Movie Ad of the Week: MEAN AND BLACK (1975) and MEAN AND BLACK (1979)

MEAN AND BLACK was a title used in 1975 for an action track re-release of GIRLS ARE FOR LOVING, the third 'Ginger' adventure starring Cheri Caffaro. Above and below: Tampa, FL - May 1, 1975.

In this case the title referred to Caffaro's co-star, actor and former pro football player Timothy Brown, but four years later...

...the handle was used again for a re-release of the 1967 spaghetti western LOLA COLT, starring Lola Falana, which had already toured drive-ins and action theaters as BLACK TIGRESS in 1976. Above is a lurid ad from its Shreveport, Louisiana opening on June 1, 1979.
An AGFA print of LOLA COLT sporting the MEAN AND BLACK title was shown at the Alamo Drafthouse Yonkers as part of their monthly Temple of Schlock series on February 28, 2016.

KILLERS ON WHEELS in 35mm on 7/13 at the Nitehawk!

Wow, check this out: Temple of Schlock founder Chris Poggiali will be at the Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn on Thursday, July 13th, to introduce a rare 35mm showing of the amazing KILLERS ON WHEELS! This event, part of the “The Deuce” screening series, is expected to sell out, so get your tickets now! HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS collides with STRAW DOGS and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT in this brutal biker flick from Hong Kong's legendary Shaw Brothers Studios. A series of increasingly hostile run-ins between a gang of rowdy Yamaha riders and two young couples staying at an island vacation home leads to deaths by electrocution, fire, boiling oil, broken glass, harpoon gun, and even outboard motor! In other words, this is more top-notch schlock from the director of THE BOXER'S OMEN! Plus, you get a snappy soundtrack of stolen music ranging from Piero Piccioni's "Identikit 2" and Herbie Hancock's "Heartbeat" to Lalo Schifrin cues swiped from KELLY'S HEROES. This is the very same, extremely rare English-dubbed 35mm print that played the grindhouses of 42nd Street! The show starts at 9:30 p.m. and, as always, there will be prizes afterwards. For more details, head over to the event page.

Movie Ad of the Week: THE JAWS OF DEATH (1977)

THE JAWS OF DEATH, William Grefe's JAWS-meets-WILLARD mix starring Richard Jaeckel, began its regional release through Cannon in July of 1976. It opened in the New York City area on March 18, 1977 -- and now, almost 40 years later, one of those 35mm prints returns to Yonkers for one showing only tonight at 7:00 at the Alamo Drafthouse (definitely not the Park Hill where it originally played!) as this month's installment of the American Genre Film Archive series curated and introduced by Temple of Schlock's own Chris Poggiali! More info can be found here.

Mystery Movies Solved! CAMPUS TEASERS and NAUGHTY FRESHMEN

Thanks to Sebastian del Castillo of the American Genre Film Archive, who provided us with frame shots from a couple of AGFA prints, we've been able to ID two more mystery titles from the shadowy SRC Films. Not surprisingly, they're both SCHOOLGIRL REPORT movies. CAMPUS TEASERS, which began its drive-in tour in 1978, is SCHULMÄDCHEN-REPORT 10 (1976), while NAUGHTY FRESHMEN -- first spotted on the drive-in circuit in 1979, and erroneously attributed on the IMDb to two earlier movies -- is actually SCHULMÄDCHEN-REPORT 11 (1977).

Movie Ad of the Week: THE ASTROLOGER (1975)

Except for a VHS release in Australia some three decades ago and a single CBS Late Movie showing on June 23, 1980 (a Monday night), this whacked-out display of Irving Wallace envy from real-life con man turned TV astrologer turned Republic Pictures squatter Craig Denney hadn't been seen since its regional theatrical roll-out in the mid '70s -- until Temple of Schlock and the American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) screened it at last year's Endangered Fest at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz! Recently, the AGFA used THE ASTROLOGER as the centerpiece of a successful Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the digitization of their rarest 35mm film prints, so hopefully we'll be seeing a sparkling new digital transfer playing at Alamo Drafthouse cinemas and available on BD/DVD in the near future.
