Movie Ad of the Week: NEGRO ES UN BELLO COLOR (1974)
The tragic interracial love story NEGRO ES UN BELLO COLOR (BLACK IS A BEAUTIFUL COLOR) -- a Mexican production starring Libertad Lamarque, Fernando Allende and Jeanne Bell -- opened in nine New York-area Spanish-language theaters on Wednesday, April 24, 1974.
This was one of the last leading roles for Lamarque, an Argentine actress-singer who was embraced by the Mexican film industry and became famous throughout Latin America after being blacklisted in her home country by Eva Perón. She toplined only two more movies after this one, then made the transition to television, where she continued to work until her death in 2000 at the age of 92.
Lamarque plays Eugenia, a famous actress-singer who is dismayed to find out that her son Mario (Allende) is in love with a black woman, Joyce (Bell), whom he intends to marry.
Allende, a popular Mexican actor who also appeared on American television shows in the 1980s and '90s (including a recurring role on the nighttime soap FLAMINGO ROAD), recently made his directorial debut with the feature film MARÍA (2010), starring his son Adan Allende as Efrain, the role he himself had played 38 years earlier in Tito Davison's filmed adaptation of the Jorge Isaacs novel.
However, what really drew us to this movie was Jeanne Bell, Playboy's Miss September 1969 and the gorgeous star of our favorite Cirio H. Santiago fighting femmes flicks, TNT JACKSON (1974) and THE MUTHERS (1976). Ms. Bell also appeared in POLICEWOMEN, THREE THE HARD WAY, and THE KLANSMAN the same year.
NEGRO ES UN BELLO COLOR is available on DVD, and also turns up on Spanish television stations, but there is no English subtitled or dubbed versions that we know of.

Movie Ad of the Week: KALIMÁN, EL HOMBRE INCREÍBLE (1974)
Kalimán, a popular character in Mexican comic books and radio adventures of the 1960s through the '80s, was played by American actor Jeff Cooper (CIRCLE OF IRON) in two big screen adventures, KALIMÁN, EL HOMBRE INCREÍBLE (1972) and KALIMÁN EN EL SINIESTRO MUNDO DE HUMANÓN (1976). According to the Wikipedia entry for Kalimán, the first movie was Mexico's biggest budgeted motion picture production for nearly two decades. Originally released in April of 1972, KALIMÁN, EL HOMBRE INCREÍBLE had a return engagement in five New York-area Spanish-language theaters in late August '74.

One-Sheet of the Week: EL GOLFO (1969)
Because the lighting is so lousy in the Temple, we usually photograph our one-sheets outside in natural light. Unfortunately, there's 2 feet of snow on the ground, with no thaw in sight, so we're going to have to do something different with our "One-Sheet of the Week" feature. The way we got around the bad weather bullshit last year: we picked out the sheet we wanted to spotlight from our collection, and then we right-clicked the scan of it from the Wrong Side of the Art. Well, we don't want to do that again this year. We'd rather put up something that can't be found anyplace else on the 'Net, 'cause blowin' your mind with goodies from the archives is what we're all about. So until the weather gets better and we can take our toys outside again, this column will be renamed "Movie Ad of the Week." Cool? We'll put up one or two or a few ads and try to write a couple of sentences about the movies represented. Here goes...
One year before THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY premiered on ABC, Shirley Jones co-starred with Spanish pop singer Raphael in EL GOLFO (1969). Here's the ad for its opening in eleven New York area Spanish-language theaters in September of '69. Never saw it, but we'd like to. Is there an English dub available?

NOW SHOWING -- May through August 1973

The other day, someone on one of the message boards started a thread proclaiming 2009 to be the greatest year for movies ever. Once I stopped laughing, I traded a few e-mails with T.O.S. contributor John W. Donaldson and we decided to put together this post to spotlight some of the movies that were in release in 1973, during what is now considered to be the big ticket summer movie season (May through August). Not everything here got a wide release -- some titles only played arthouses and ethnic theaters in big cities, while others played for years in rural drive-ins and never reached New York or L.A. -- but they were all playing somewhere. It's quite a list, not even close to complete, and we didn't even include porn! Keep in mind also that these are just the movies released during the four months covered; Clint Eastwood's HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER, Mario Bava's BARON BLOOD, Lucio Fulci's ONE ON TOP OF THE OTHER, the original WALKING TALL and others -- released a month or several prior to May -- were probably still making the rounds or were held over in some cities and towns.
It must've been a very exciting time to be a moviegoer.

"Horror, Horror y Sexo" in the Bronx

Here's an ad for a live musical stage show titled "Horror, Horror y Sexo" that was performed at the Puerto Rico Theater in the Bronx in 1971 before showings of SINISTER INVASION (one of the four Mexican co-productions Boris Karloff made with Jack Hill in 1968)! A Regency Caribbean production directed by Willy Chevalier, with a libretto by Tony Betancourt, "Horror, Horror y Sexo" co-starred Perla Faith from Nuyorican films such as LA TIGRESA (1970) and NATAS ES SATAN (1975) and Iraida Polanco, who was a busy actress in New York-shot films (BAD LIEUTENANT, RANSOM) and TV shows (LAW AND ORDER, NYPD BLUE) for 15 years prior to her death last year. I wonder if there's a copy of the script at Lincoln Center or elsewhere in the New York Public Library system.

Nuevo Edison presenta "Marathon Del Horror" 1979

Long-time T.O.S. contributor John W. Donaldson wrote to us over the weekend to say "More Spanish language ads, please!" and included the above flyer, from a 4th of July all-day Mexican horror movie festival that he attended at the Nuevo Edison (now a Lucille Roberts gym) in 1979.
