ReplyDeleteJust curious, what did these grindhouses look like on the inside? Also, what would you consider to be your favorite grindhouse films? I'm a collector of these films and am trying to narrow down a list of double features to play for friends at my house.
ReplyDeleteJohnathan, a terrific site to learn about the theaters on 42nd Street is cinematreasures.com. Go there and look up the names of the theaters and you'll be rewarded with a plethora of information. Except for the Cine 42, which was built in the early '70s as a single-screen "action house" (and twinned later in the decade), all of the theaters had large, ornate interiors with balconies when they were built years earlier as vaudeville or legitimate show palaces.
ReplyDeleteAs far as recommendations for "grindhouse" films, that's a tall order indeed, since "grindhouse" isn't a genre but rather a type of theater that ran porno, horror, action and exploitation movies. A great place to start would be Bill Landis' book "Sleazoid Express."
You can read my book "Times Queer" for a feel of how it used to be in the mid-60s. On Amazon or my web pages
ReplyDeleteBASIC TRAINING??? As in the Direct Cinema documentary directed by Frederick Wiseman??
ReplyDeleteHa! Dante, you just gave us the biggest laugh we've had all week. No, it was the Rhonda Shear sex comedy BASIC TRAINING, available on DVD from MGM.
ReplyDeleteWow, the South side definitely had the best marquee value that week!
