Mystery Movie: KISS THE TEACHER GOODBYE! (1975)
The Internet Movie Database (IMDb) claims KISS THE TEACHER GOODBYE! is the "promotional title" of TRIP WITH THE TEACHER, but the official Crown International Pictures ad slick above - from the summer of '75 - blasts that theory in the ass by featuring both of those titles on the same triple bill. Please note the lack of an MPAA rating for our mystery movie, a possible tip-off that it isn't rated R like the other two films on the bill. In fact, we have several newspaper ads for KISS THE TEACHER GOODBYE that sport a PG rating, leading us to believe that it's a re-titling of THE YOUNG GRADUATES, a GP-rated Crown release from '71 in which a romance between teacher Tom Stewart and student Patricia Wymer leads to a pregnacy scare and is the catalyst for the latter's runaway road trip to Big Sur. But that's just an educated guess. Anyone know for sure what this is?
It must be The Young Graduates or Horror High aka Twisted Brain, I checked Crown's Filmography on imdb and those are the only high school themed movies made before 1975.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing in that ad slick that resembles THE YOUNG GRADUATES in any way. However, the theory itself is certainly plausible. In Seattle, THE YOUNG GRADUATES often appeared in various drive-in triple-bills, so I can't imagine why it would have been retitled.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous -- There is nothing in the ad slicks of Crown's BEST FRIENDS and MALIBU HIGH that resemble those films in any way either, so I don't even take that kind of thing into consideration anymore. In 1975, Crown put together 4 triple bills as a way to repackage some of their catalog titles; they needed a third "teacher feature" to round out a triple bill, and THE YOUNG GRADUATES seems like the logical choice since it does have the teacher-student relationship front and center. Or maybe it's not THE YOUNG GRADUATES. Maybe it's HORROR HIGH or something else. We won't know for sure unless someone finds a print with this title attached, or if a person who saw it way back when writes in with the details.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody here have any connections with Crown International? Perhap someone at Crown would have that information?
ReplyDeleteYou could always ask the people at Crown; their email is crown@crownintlpictures.com
ReplyDeleteBarring that, you could contact Mill Creek (the company that currently has the video rights to the Crown Library), although they usually don't seem to know much about the films they put out.
I just received a brief email from Crown International. The title KISS THE TEACHER GOODBYE was changed to HORROR HIGH for the Crown release. There's our answer!

Great sleuthing, John! Thanks for solving this "mystery movie" for us!
ReplyDeleteWe made the film as "Horror High" and Crown released it theatrical with that title. It played consistently for 3 years in theaters and drive-ins, and we later found out that they were also releasing it under other titles in different regions. Crown, under their Goldkey name released the film on TV as "Twisted Brain" and the film played thru the 70's and 80's with that title. The film was pirated from poor quality VHS TV recordings on Home video, and transfered to digital and released on DVD by a firm in the midwest. Horror High, Ltd. has never seen a dime of profit.- Pat Cardi (Actor)
